What Type of Resell Rights Should I Offer?
What Type of Resell Rights Should I Offer?
You have 2 markets to target when you sell your E-books or information products.
• Consumers – people who buy your product for PERSONAL USE
• Resellers – people who buy your product to sell them off for a profit
People who do not give much consideration to these two markets will run the risk of losing significant income. One doesn’t just slap resell rights on a product to increase the perceived value of an E-book. In fact, you might actually lose more profits because you spawn more and more of your own competitors.
Beware that regardless of whatever resell terms you include with your product, there will always be resellers that will sell your product as low as $1.97 or $0.97. Many marketers give out resell rights knowing full well that this will happen. Why? Well, since you can’t really stop resellers from going low, you might as well capitalize on their marketing efforts through back end sales.
When you sell your E-book, you must decide carefully what type of resell rights you are offering for your E-book depending on the niche you are targeting:
There are two types of Resell Rights, which are: Basic and Master.
- Basic Resell Rights. You have the right to resell the product to your customers but your customers DO NOT have the rights to resell to others. In other words your customers will buy the product more for PERSONAL USE.
- Master Resell Rights. You have the right to resell the product as well as pass resell rights to your customers (whether they are basic or master rights).
Here are some techniques on how to identify what type of resell rights to give to your products (or no resell rights at all).
Offer basic resell rights when you have a hot, in-demand product where the information is cutting edge and more tailored for personal use but you want to reach out to a larger market and you want to protect your product from price cutting.
Advantages:
- Make profits up-front by selling the book for a high price on the front end
- Make profits by selling basic resell rights to resellers
- Protect the perceived value of your products by giving basic resell rights ONLY to trusted and well-known resellers (who know how to market without price cutting)
- Make other profits from back-end sales.
Offer master resell rights when you have a product that you want it to go as viral as possible irregardless of the price cutting of other resellers. WARNING – only give master resell rights when you have a strong back end in place or else you will be wasting your content!
Advantages:
- Make some upfront profits but focus more on the back-end
- Create a viral marketing effect spreading your E-book and your name all over the Internet (especially through undercutting resellers)
- Offer re-branding rights for your product to keep on spreading your back-end.
Offer giveaway rights when you have a small but viral E-book to pass around for free! You won’t make any money from the front-end but you will make lots of money on the back-end because you are encouraging people to give away the product for free.
Advantages:
- Bring traffic to your back-end
- Give other resellers an option to add your product as a bonus to the products they are selling. This will help them increase the perceived value of their products and spread your book and affiliate links to their mailing lists
- Offer free re-branding rights to further enhance the viral marketing effect.
You can see this technique used all over the internet. Think about all the free membership sites that offer a backend paid membership option, or those that sell products within the free members area. Also, there are tons of free software products that offer a more powerful, paid version, which many then purchase once they see the benefits and/or realize the limitations of the free version.
Apply the correct resell rights to your products and you will see many more returns for your efforts!

Very informative keep sending the great info!
Hi Ron.
You have a lot of good information here. You mentioned sales on the back-end. When I sell something that comes with Master Rights I offer website setup for those who would like to sell the product but either don’t know how to set up their webpage or simply don’t have the time to do so. It’s a good way to get an additional $10 profit from sales — plus I send “their” customers to “my” download page so I’m also getting their customers on my list and to my various websites. It’s turned out to be a nice extra bit of income
Take care,
Paula
this was some good information. I have not gotten that far in my own business yet. I am still working a full time job to pay the bills and work on my own business a few hours a day. One day all I will be doing is my business.
Hi Ron,
You have also been like a mentor to me, helping me with my giveaway graphics, providing free and useful information and books.
I have learn a lot from you including the present blog on resell rights of info products.
Many Thanks for all your generosity and free information
Ken
Thanks Steve! I hope to do so!
Paula, that’s really some great information! Many people don’t realize that they can use their online experience and skills to generate online income and do it strategically in the form of a back-end or download page offer. You can build minisites, write articles, install blogs and blog themes/plugins, setup domains and hosting… let’s just say there’s a whole bunch of stuff you can help people with
Dawn, keep it up!
Ken, I’m honored. Thanks for the kind words.
As was mentioned in the post, even though you may be offering some sort of resale rights, you should really focus upon your backend products and services because that’s where you’re going to be making the most money from.
As an Internet marketer myself, I can greatly appreciate the fact that offering resale rights is a very good thing for your business. However, like was also mentioned, people tend to sell your products for far less than what they’re really worth, but that’s ok so as long as you have a good backend product.
I handle private label rights, or PLR materials. However, I provide these because I realize that people are going to modify the content and change it, but that’s what I want with these products. I provide these to people who are in great need for content in their businesses, and PLR material surely fits the bill.
Offering any form of resale rights gives other people a chance to start up their own businesses, even if the products they’re selling aren’t really their own. A matter of fact, most people either don’t have the time to create their own products, or they’re just too intimodated to do so. However, whatever the case may be, simply offering these resale rights products gives even the most green internet marketer a head start in the right direction. That’s because they have an already made product that they can immediately begin selling from their site.
Just the whole concept of resale rights has greatly improved the playing field for people who want to go into business for themselves online these days. PLR just adds to the already lucrative resale rights phenominon. It adds that flare that is needed to get people’s creative juices flowing without having them to generate a complete product from scratch.
With PLR content, they have something on the screen to work with, where as if you had to create a product yourself, you may be staring at a blank screen for a very long time. For whose who want to create their own products, PLR material really fits the bill nicely because it gives those who want to create products something to work with immediately.
All they need to do, is to simply edit the content, add their two-cents worth in, put their name on it as the author, and whala! They have their own unique product in their hands, ready to sell.
However, if you do decide to offer private label rights products, just remember that you have given people the right to modify the content and there fore, they may come up with something even greater than what you had originally created. At this point, focus on the selling price of the PLR product because that’s where you will be making the most money from, not from the content itself because even if you had mentioned a really great backend product inside the PLR material, you can rest assured that if people modify it, they’ll remove that offer and place their own in there.
You may want to place your backend offer on your thankyou page when people order your PLR product, or you can place it as a simple file that is included inside the package when you sell it.
You could even offer multiple types of resale rights on the same product to fit your customer’s needs if you so choose, but that is totally up to you.
I always buy or collect mainly books/reports, that I can sell/giveaway for personal use only. Hopefully, as I gain more knowledge, I’ll be able to use these to build my lists. I have in the past, bought many of these items with master resale rights but I really don’t know how to benefit from them. So for now, I’m sticking to basic rights.
Rob…
Hi Ron
This is very good reading I am just getting started. Internet Marketing is a bit overwelming.I’ve had offers for PLRs,but never could figure it out. Maybe I will look into this further,Ron gave some great info also.Thank You and your commenters.
I appreciate the information that you provide as well as your other subscribers! PLR products can give a new and seasoned marketer the “edge” when building a list and bringing cash home. Ultimately, it helps to “brand” yourself.
Mark
Finally created my very first own “special offer” on this site. I’ve offered a free e-book then a “special offer” to the plr rights. I even managed a sale here – makes you feel good that maybe you got something right.
Mike
Great info! You covered a lot in your post, I’m impressed! You have good teaching skills in your writing, You cover a large amount of info, and made it clear to read and understand.. Thanks! Take Care and GOD Bless!
Good information on the different types of resell rights. It can be overwhelming at times. This informatio0n will help. Thanks
I’m learning a few things. My questions: What do you mean by back-end and front-end?
I’m past the newbie in theory, but not in practice. I can understand these concepts but I’m not into reselling yet. I recorded your post in my knowledge base. Thanks a lot for your informative messages.
Hi Ron
thanks for the insight, I think MRR is a better product than PLR because of what you can do with it. MRR no restrictions which makes
it easier to call the product your own.
Donald, great info! Yes, PLR (Private Label Rights) is probably the best way to go because of the freedom that comes with it. Not only can you brand it as your own, but you can rework the content, add your own affiliate links, etc. It’s a great way to help become an authority in your niche without spending hours and hours on research and writing.
Mark, a front-end product is the one that’s showcased on the sales page or giveaway page. The back-end can be one of many things. It is what the visitor is shown after purchasing or downloading the front end. Here are some examples of back-ends:
1. An OTO (One Time Offer). For example, it could be offering a deal on a product that compliments the front-end product. It could also be a discounted price for a membership site.
2. An Opt-In Form – You get everyone that buys your product to opt-in to your list to get the download link. This way, if you have affiliates promoting for you, all the buyers they refer go onto YOUR list. This is a subtle but highly powerful back-end technique.
3. An upgrade. If the front-end is a free membership site, the back-end could be a special paid membership offer, which grants the member more features/info, etc.
4. MRR/RR/PLR back-end. After purchasing/downloading the front-end product, the visitor is offered rights (MRR/RR/PLR) to the product for an additional price.
5. FILL IN THE BLANK. Back-ends are so versatile that I could keep writing the list here forever. Be creative and see what products/services would be suitable for a back-end offer.
Paul, I think you mean that PLR is better than MRR, right? PLR is the one with no restrictions and allows you to call the product your own.
Thanks again for all the great comments!
Hey Ron,
Thanks for the personal note and answering my questions. I admire your expertise.
